About

I am an experienced media specialist who has combined careers in journalism, academia and consultancy. I have considerable knowledge of media and politics, and currently work as a senior lecturer in political communication and journalism at the School of Communications at Dublin City University where I run the MA in Political Communication.

Having completed a research masters in economics – and later a masters in politics – my work in journalism started with RTÉ, the Irish national broadcaster, where I was a radio presenter – primarily with This Week but I also presented Morning Ireland and the News at One – and later I was a correspondent with Prime Time. I specialised in covering politics and, while based in Leinster House, I worked with The Irish Times (political reporter), The Sunday Times (political correspondent) and the Sunday Tribune (political editor/assistant editor). I was also for a short period editor of Magill magazine. My reporting career also allowed me to cover elections at Westminster, in Scotland and Germany as well as other foreign assignments in Malawi, Tanzania, the Beslan school massacre and the death of Pope John Paul II. Having completed a doctorate in politics I left journalism in 2008 and now work at an academic and consultant.

I bring this wealth of experience and insight to my role as a communications advisor working with corporate and voluntary sector clients in areas of media training; speech writing; research consultancy; political analysis. In recent times I have worked as a research consultant for the European Commission, the Economist Intelligence Unit in London, the Irish Film Board and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

You’ll find information about my research projects and various publications at this link. I have authored eight books, edited another two and my research on media and politics has been published in several international academic journals. Recent books include Democratic Left: The Life and Death of an Irish Political Party (Irish Academic Press, 2011) and The Road to Power: How Fine Gael Made History (New Island, 2011). I am also editor of Irish Journalism Before Independence: More a Disease than a Profession  published by Manchester University Press in November 2011.
